Maquila means "processing fee." Maquiladora is a manufacturing plant that imports and assemble duty free components for export. This allows the manufacture owners to take advantage of their low cost labour. The owners only pays the "value added" meaning the value of the finished product minus the total of the components that has been imported to make that specific product. Majority of maquiladoras are owned and operated by Mexican, Asian, and American companies.
