Watts Riots of 1965 The Watts Riots was a race riot that took place in the Watts neighborhood in Los Angeles in August of 1965. In 6 days, there were 34 deaths, 1,032 injuries, 3,438 arrests, and over $40 million in property damage. It was caused by an incident where the policemn had pulled over an African- American man for minor vehicle violations. The officers had used force to restrain him therefore the residents began yelling and throwing things. The situation soon escalated. From 1940-1965, the African American population in Los Angeles had gone from 63,700 to 350,000 (550% increase in 15 years).
