United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) - is a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 1948. The declaration ascended after the Second World War and it represented the first global expression of rights to all humans beings no matter what color, size, race, etc.
This affects South Africa as they wanted to protect their system of apartheid at the time.
From the UN Website:
"The United Nations General Assembly on 12 November 1974 suspended South Africa from participating in its work, due to international opposition to the policy of apartheid. South Africa was re-admitted to the UN in 1994 following its transition into a democracy. Since 1994 the democratically elected government has pursued a foreign policy based on the centrality of the UN in the multilateral system."
