Truth and Reconciliation Commission

A group in South Africa created in the post-apartheid era to host public hearings in order for:
  1. People/groups who had been victims of “gross human rights violations” to give their testimonies of what had happened to them
  2. People/groups who had inflicted violence on others to give their testimony and request amnesty

The focus was more on reconciliation and less on retribution.

It is generally considered to have been successful and has been viewed as a crucial part of South Africa’s successful transition to a democratic state.
