Steve Bantu Biko (1946 - 1977) was an anti - apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s. As a student leader, he founded the Black Consciousness Movement which empowered and mobilized majority of the urban Black population. Even though he was never a member of the African National Congress (ANC), the ANC had included him in the pantheon of struggle heroes. He was also famous for his slogan "Black is Beautiful" which he described as a meaning "man, you are okay as you are, begin to look upon yourself as a human being" While being interrogated by policy in 1977, he was beaten and tortured for 22 hours and died a few weeks later as a result of his injuries.
