Soweto is an urban area of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa. It borders the city's mining belt in the south. Earlier in 1904, a cluster of townships were established. It was created to house mainly black laborers, who worked in mines and other industries in city, away from the city centre. The inner city was reserved for whites as segregation began.
It was not until 1963 that the acronym "Soweto" was adopted.
