The SCLC was founded in 1957 after the Montgomery Bus Boycott by Martin Luther King, Jr and 60 other ministers. They advocated boycotts and nonviolent protests in order to gain attention and power for the African American community during the Civil Rights Movement. They thought that the churches should be at the heart of the movement. They were sometimes criticized by other groups (like SNCC and CORE) not being militant enough.
