Milliken v. Bradley (1974), was an important U.S. Supreme Court case concerning the planned desegregation busing of public school students across the district lines among 53 schools districts in Detroit. The ruling clarified that the distinction between de jure and defacto segregation was allowed only f it was not considered an explicit policy of the school district. The court stated that the school systems were not responsible for desegregation across district lines unless it could be shown that they deliberately engaged in a policy of segregation.
