Malcolm X, also known as Malcolm Little and El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, was an African American Muslim minister and a human right activist. His admirers considered him to a courageous advocate for the rights of blacks and the most influential African American in history. He described himself as the "angriest Black man in America". Malcolm had rejected Martin Luther King's non- confrontational approach as he mocked King's march on Washington (August 1963). He preached independence, black power and consciousness. The Civil Rights Movement had, in his view, "begged the white man for freedom". He believed that begging for freedom will not set you free. On February 21, 1965, he was shot sixteen times and killed as he was about to deliver a lecture at Audubon Ballroom in Harlem.
