James Meredith is an American Civil rights movement figure, a writer, and a political adviser. In 1962, he was the first African American student to be admitted to the segregated University of Mississippi (Ross Barnett, the state governor had vociferously opposed his enrollment). Meredith continued to work as a civil rights activist that was most notably by leading the March Against Fear in 1966 (a protest against voter registration intimidation) It was during the march that Meredith was shot, wounded, and hospitalized. He rejoined the march in its last days. At some point, his politics took a sharp swing to the right, and he renounced his role in the Civil Rights movement, opposed the holiday honoring Martin Luther King, and opposed affirmative action. From 1989 to 1991, he became an adviser to southern conservative senator Jesse Helms
