Ivan Stambolić was a communist Party of Yugoslavia official as well as the President of the Republic of Serbia in the 1980s. He was a personable and generous man but slightly naive. Stambolic and Milosevic held similar views on the provinces of Serbia, Kosovo and Vojvodina. They both felt that constitutional changes were necessary to sort out their relationship with the centre. Stambolic was the one who shaped the future of Milosevic, In the 1970s he had secured Milosevic the top job of Beogradska Banka and in 1984, Stamcolic was able to become the head of the Serbian Branch of the Yugoslav Lague of Communists. However in 1987 his career had ended when Miosevic staged a coup, taking over the Serbian Communist party, and relegating him to the margins.
