Emmett Till
"This boy's dreadful tragedy I can still remember well. The color of his skin was black and his name was Emmett Till."
– Bob Dylan ["The Death of Emmett Till."]

Emmett Till was 14 year old who was visiting relatives in Mississippi in August of 1955. After he supposedly flirted with a white store clerk, he was kidnapped, beaten, and murdered. When the men were put on trial, they were acquitted by an all-white jury. His murder and the following trial are considered the beginning of the Civil Rights movement. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus 100 days later.
