Betty Friedan was an American writer, activist, and feminist. Her 1963 book, The Feminine Mystique was often credited with sparking the second wave of American Feminism in the 20th century. In 1966 Friedan founded and was elected as the first president of the National Organization for Women whose aim was to bring women into the mainstream of American society with the same equality as men. She also organized the nationwide Women's Strike for Equality on August 26th, the 50th anniversary of the 20th Amendment granting women the right to vote. Additionally, she also founded the National Association for the Real of Abortion Laws.
